The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing (FSMFN) offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and post-master’s certificates leading to education as a certified nurse-midwife (CNM), family nurse practitioner (FNP), and/or a women’s health care nurse practitioner (WHCNP).

A master's degree in nursing will improve your career mobility and professional network. This degree is for nurses who want are interesting in furthering their expertise in a particular specialization and becoming nationally certified. For nurses interested in managerial or executive positions, an MSN is a must. The duration of a full-time program requires about two years. The prerequisite for some programs is having practiced as an RN for at least one to 2 years. Online master degree programs are especially useful in that they allow for a nurse to continue working as he/she is pursing an MSN.

Masters in Nursing

There are severeal areas of study within the nursing degree.

  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
    Family nurse practitioners FNP are advanced practice nurses who have received the additional education to provide primary health care nursing, health information, and community-based case management in many clinical settings ranging from private practices to managed care organizations and governmental agencies. In their practice, family nurse practitioners diagnose illnesses and prescribe interventions through interview and physical exam, order labs and diagnostic tests, and may prescribe medications to patients.
  • Health Care Education
    Nurses will gain industry knowledge and skills in areas such as the roles and responsibilities of a health educator; teaching and learning strategies; design and process of curriculum development.
  • Leadership and Management
    Qualify for positions of leadership and management in all sectors of the health care system.
  • Nurse Midwifery
    In the Community-based Nurse-Midwifery Education Program (CNEP), students complete a self-directed, modular course of nursing study over two to three years. During the clinical practicum, CNEP students work closely with the certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) in their community. Registered nurses RN gain practitioner skills in antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum nursing, family planning, and selected aspects of well-women's health care nursing.

RN to MSN
MS or Master of Science in Nursing degree

This program prepares nurses to assume positions requiring graduate preparation, including the advanced practice roles of Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse-Midwife and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Master’s degree-prepared nurses are in high demand as expert clinicians, nurse executives, clinical educators, health policy consultants, and research assistants.

RN to MSN programs generally take about 3 years to complete. RN to MSN programs are offered largely online or in a blended classroom/online format.

For nurses, RN to MSN programs can be an important first step in their education en route to doctoral preparation.
