Checklist of Preceptor Responsibilities
This is a checklist of things you will want to be comfortable with, as well
as a reference to more details about each item found in this workbook.
- Familiarize yourself with the Frontier curriculum. Appendix
A.
- Set up a pre-clinical meeting with the student either prior to Level III
or just before the clinical experience begins.
Part 2. B-2: Clinical Supervision Requirements.
- Use the a critical thinking process in your daily teaching. Assist
the student to write or dictate a thorough, concise SOAP note. Part
2.C-4: SOAP Documentation.
- The student must follow the site guidelines and practice agreement. However,
the student needs to be able to suggest alternative management ideas for discussion
with preceptors even if they cannot be followed.
- As the student becomes more independent, the preceptor must still be present
for deliveries and all complicated management decisions.
Part 2.B-2: Clinical Supervision Requirements.
- Make time to pre and post conference with students on a daily basis in a
quiet, confidential area. Part
2.C-3: The Daily Post Clinical Conference.
- Preceptors are required to fill in at least two of the three areas available
for them to document progress on the Daily DAT. The student is required
to fill in the rest of the DAT. At some point during clinical, the RCC may
suggest changing the daily DAT to a weekly one. Additionally, after approximately
one month, the student and preceptor need to fill out the monthly DAT form
for clinical assessment. Part
2.C-2: Required Paperwork for Preceptors.
- Set up a time to review progress and determine a realistic time frame for
completion after about 3 months or mid-way through clinical. Sometime
about midway through the clinical rotation, the RCC will contact you to set
up a site visit. She will spell out the goals and expectations for you
and the student during the visit. Part
2.C-1: RCC
Contact and Site Visiting.
- Maintain regular contact with the RCC regarding the student’s progress and
contact the RCC whenever a problem arises that you want help with or need
to contact the school about.
- It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with course work that is required
during the clinical rotation. At times, it may be necessary for the student
to be taken out of clinical for a short time to complete some of the course
work.
- When the clinical is complete, or when the preceptor deems the student ready
to be a beginning level practitioner, the preceptor will complete the Declaration
of Safety form and send it to Hyden. Part
3.A: Declaration of Safety (DOS).
